Settlement breaks that look like fraud
A missing fee line and a late presentment can mimic chargeback loss. Audit the batch before you escalate risk.
Fintech merchants in Hong Kong often treat every unexplained shortfall as a fraud event. In our samples, a meaningful share traces to settlement mechanics: truncated MID mappings, dual currency fee lines, or presentments that land after the ledger day has closed.
Start with the processor batch ID, not the customer ticket. Match deposit totals to settlement reports before opening a dispute investigation. When the numbers disagree by a fixed fee pattern, you usually have a configuration issue — not a cardholder.
Document the break type once. Recurring fee mis-maps waste more hours than rare genuine fraud spikes.
A short weekly settlement integrity check keeps month-end from becoming archaeology.
